Hot Water With Lemon Benefits

1. Supports Digestion

Hot lemon water can help stimulate digestive juices and enzymes, which support the healthy breakdown of food in your body. This can help prevent various digestion-related issues such as bloating, constipation, and indigestion.

Lemon water is an excellent source of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the body from harmful substances while also aiding in the absorption of iron.

Both citric acid and vitamin C are critical for proper digestion. Citric acid stimulates stomach acid production to get your digestive juices flowing! It improves the body’s ability to break down and digest food effectively.

Additionally, drinking hot lemon water can help balance your pH levels, which leads to better absorption of nutrients.

Vitamin C also acts as a natural diuretic, which helps to flush out toxins and waste materials from the digestive tract. Furthermore, it may help reduce inflammation, relieve constipation, and improve gut health.

Lemon has been found to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal diseases, such as ulcers and stomach cancer.

With its natural cleansing properties and significant nutritional value, incorporating lemon water into your diet can be an easy and effective way to improve your digestive health.

2. Boosts Immunity

As stated above, vitamin C is essential in supporting a healthy digestive system. When it comes to your immune system, it play an equally important role.

Not only is it an effective antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, but it also helps flush out toxins from the body.

Vitamin C boots the production of white blood cells, which are important for protecting the body against disease. Because of this, drinking hot lemon water regularly can help you fight off colds, the flu, and other illnesses more easily.

Additionally, lemons contain potassium, which plays an important role in electrolyte balance and nerve functioning, both of which help the body stay healthy and strong!

3. Aids Weight Loss

Hot lemon water has also been shown to be effective for weight loss due to its ability to increase metabolism and reduce appetite. Lemons contain pectin, which can help reduce cravings and curb hunger.

Because lemons are low in calories but high in fiber, they are an excellent choice for aiding in weight loss. Fiber helps keep you full longer, so you won’t be tempted to snack on unhealthy foods throughout the day!

Not to mention, lemon water (hot or cold) is a great alternative to sugary drinks like soda or juice that can add unnecessary calories to your diet.

4. Clears Skin

Drinking hot lemon water regularly is an easy way to keep your skin looking its best. Acne, breakouts, and other skin issues are no match for lemons!

The vitamin C helps to reduce inflammation caused by acne and blemishes, while the citric acid helps exfoliate dead skin cells

The high levels of vitamin C in lemons can also help improve your skin’s texture and reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and blemishes. Lemons also contain antioxidants which can help prevent signs of aging.

5. Detoxifies Your Body

As mentioned above, hot lemon water helps flush out toxins from your body while supporting the liver’s natural detoxification processes.

This can help you feel more energized throughout the day and may even aid in improving digestion and eliminating any bad breath caused by built-up toxins in the body.

Lemons are a great way to detoxify your body, as they help rid our bodies of toxins, impurities, and free radicals. This boosts our digestive health, making us feel better overall.

6. Reduces Stress

Lemons are packed with antioxidants that help reduce stress and anxiety. These antioxidants work to protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress caused by chronic stress.

Our favorite vitamin, vitamin C, has been shown to reduce the level of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone in the body.

Drinking lemon water can also help lower your blood pressure, as the high levels of potassium found in lemons can help regulate your heart rate and keep it healthy.

The scent of lemon has also been found to have a calming effect on the body and mind. Additionally, lemon water can help to hydrate the body and promote digestion, both of which are essential for reducing stress.

Furthermore, the act of making and drinking lemon water can also be a mindfulness practice that helps to relax the mind and reduce stress.

Next time you feel overwhelmed or anxious, try sipping on a refreshing glass of lemon water to bring peace and calm to your day!

7. Improves Mood

Lemons contain essential oils that have been known to improve mood, reduce stress levels and make you feel more positive overall! They also contain nutrients such as phytonutrients which aid in improving brain function and reducing inflammation associated with depression.

Vitamin C plays an important role in producing serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, and sleep. It is known as the “happy hormone” because it creates feelings of well-being and happiness.

As stated above, drinking lemon water can also help to reduce stress levels and keep you calm, cool, and collected, as citrus aromas have been shown to have a calming effect on the mind and body.

Drinking lemon water can help to keep the body hydrated, which is important for overall health and well-being.

Dehydration can cause irritability, fatigue, and even depression.

8. Freshens Breath

Not many people know this fact, but lemons can actually help freshen your breath!

The acidic nature of lemons helps to kill off bacteria and other germs that cause bad breath.

Lemon juice contains citric acid which helps break down plaque on the teeth and reduce oral bacteria that cause bad breath. The acidic nature of lemons helps kill off germs in the mouth, while its vitamin C content reduces inflammation in the mouth that can lead to bad odors.

Lemons are also known to act as natural astringents, helping tighten up pores around the tongue and throat where odor-causing bacteria tend to accumulate over time.

Furthermore, drinking hot lemon water stimulates saliva production, which helps flush away food particles and bacteria from your mouth, thus reducing any unpleasant odors associated with them.

Fun tip: try squeezing a little lemon juice onto a cotton swab and rub it along your gums in order to get rid of bad breath! Just be careful to not rub lemon on your teeth, as lemon can harm your enamel.

9. Improves Hair Health

Vitamin C helps to nourish the scalp and promote blood circulation, which in turn promotes hair growth. It’s also essential for collagen production that strengthens hair follicles.

Not only are lemons rich in vitamin C, but they are also rich in B-complex vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, and biotin – all necessary vitamins for healthy hair.

Moreover, the antioxidants present in lemon water prevent oxidative stress in hair cells, making them less prone to breakage and damage.

The acidic nature of lemon juice helps to balance the pH levels of the scalp and eliminate excess oils and dandruff, which are two of the leading causes of hair loss.

Drinking lemon water also improves blood circulation, providing the necessary nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles, resulting in better hair growth.

Thus, drinking lemon water regularly can promote lustrous, healthy, and smooth hair, making it an excellent addition to your hair care routine.

Hot Lemon Water Recipe

To make this dynamic duo, you’ll need the following:

  1. Juice from 1/2 a lemon
  2. lemon squeezer
  3. Your favorite mug
  4. A means of making hot water – I use an electric tea kettle from Black + Decker. I easily turn mine on as soon as I get out of bed in the morning.

Lemon will do what it does best (cleansing, restoring, and hydrating your body) on an empty stomach, which is why you should drink it before drinking or eating anything else (more on this below!).

With my lemon squeezer, I’ll squeeze ½ a lemon into my hot water.  This might seem like a lot to most, but I really enjoy the taste of lemon, so I tend to use a bit more!

If you prefer to use a ¼ of the lemon, that is more than okay! Please base it on your own personal preference.

Pro tip: If you want want to kick things up a notch, you can try adding a dash of cayenne pepper to your lemon water.

Cayenne pepper is known to boost your metabolism, but please be careful because it is seriously spicy.

When to Drink Hot Lemon Water

Experts recommend drinking hot water with lemon in the morning on an empty stomach for maximum health benefits. If you really enjoy the taste of lemon, you can also drink it before meals.

Drinking water with lemon throughout the day can help keep you energized and focused, thanks to its natural properties that promote mental clarity and alertness.

I personally drink hot water with lemon upon waking up in the morning. Making this concoction has now become a meditative habit for me – similar to drinking coffee, which I partake in as well!

At night, I’ll sometimes opt for a cup of decaf tea or hot water with lemon an hour or so before bed. I’ve noticed that I feel less bloated the morning after drinking hot lemon water at night.

It is very important to note that the acid in lemons can harm the enamel on your teeth.

It is best to brush your teeth first and then drink your warm water with lemon – but be sure to wait a few minutes before drinking it.

A clean mouth will create a layer of pellicle on the teeth and protect them from lemon after you brush.

Another option is to drink your lemon water first and then wait at least 30 minutes to brush your teeth.

Otherwise, brushing and using toothpaste too soon can thin your enamel.  After drinking your warm lemon water, rise your mouth with water but don’t use mouthwash!

Although this might seem a bit weird, I’ve started using metal straws to help prevent any enamel damage.

If you start incorporating this daily lemon water habit into your routine, try drinking from straw to protect your teeth from the lemon’s acid.
